“We will get you home,” he tells those in Afghanistan.
President Biden discussed the evacuation efforts in a televised speech to the American people on Friday. He described the effort as “one of the largest most difficult airlifts in history.”
“And the only country in the world capable of projecting this much power on the far side of the world with this degree of precision is the United States of America,” he said. “We have established the flow of flights and we have increased the number of people we are moving out of the country.”
He pledged that “any American that wants to come home, we will get you home.”
Nearly 6,000 American troops are now on the ground at Kabul airport, he said. He said the United States still does not know how many Americans are in Afghanistan, however.
“We’re going to do everything, everything that we can to provide safe evacuation for our Afghan allies, partners, and Afghans who might be targeted because of their association with the United States,” he said.
Without explaining further, he said the U.S. would give food and medicine aid to the Afghan people if called upon. At the conclusion of his talk, he responded to a few questions from the White House press corps.
